What might a privacy choice look like?

Privacy choices can appear in different places when you use a phone, an app or a website. Here are some examples of what you may see and where to look for more information.

EXAMPLE 01

When an app asks for access

☀
Allow “Weather” to use your location?
Your location can be used to show weather information for your area.
Allow While Using App
Allow Once
Don't Allow
What to look for

What does the app want to access?

Apps may ask for access to information or features such as your location, photographs, contacts or microphone. Look at what is being requested and consider whether the app needs that access for the service you want to use.

EXAMPLE 02

When an app asks about tracking

Allow this app to track your activity across other companies' apps and websites?
You may be given a choice about whether this activity can be tracked.
Ask App Not to Track
Allow
What to look for

You may be asked about tracking.

Take a moment to understand what the app is asking permission to do and look at the choices available before making your decision.

EXAMPLE 03

When a website asks about cookies

What to look for

Look at the choices available.

Cookie notices may give you several options. Instead of automatically accepting everything, look at the available choices and decide what you are comfortable allowing.

EXAMPLE 04

When you want more information

Where to look

Privacy information is often found at the bottom of a website.

Look for links such as Privacy Policy, Privacy Notice or Cookie Policy. These can provide more information about how personal information is collected, used or shared.

REMEMBER

The wording and appearance may be different.

Different phones, apps and websites may present privacy choices in different ways. You do not need to memorise these examples. When you are asked to make a privacy choice, remember:
